When you think of a steamer, the first thing you will probably think of is steaming vegetables, but there are so many other great ways to use a wok steamer. We’ve chosen three of our favourite ways to use our wok steamers.


Steamed crab


If you love crab, steaming is a great way to retain the juices and prevent the crab from becoming water-logged. Steaming crab is simple, bring about an inch of salted water to the boil in your wok. Whilst the water is coming to the boil, put the crabs in the steaming basket, you can season with garlic at this point if you would like to add some extra flavour. 


Steam the crabs for 10 to 20 minutes depending on the size of the crabs, remove from the steamer with tongs and let cool before you serve to prevent you and your guests from burning their fingers! Don’t forget to whip up a delicious garlic butter dip to dunk the tender crab in.


Serve your crab with a simple side salad of lettuce, cucumber and tomato or for an extra treat some crispy seasoned fries.




Not only are dumplings delicious, they are also fun to make and a great option for beginners if you want to get into the world of dumpling making. Steamed dumplings are more resilient, so you will have less to worry about when making them for the first time.


There are lots of recipes online to follow for both meat and vegetarian dumplings but the dough generally contains the same ingredients; flour, water and oil. There are so many different options for fillings, really the only limitation is your imagination. You can opt for classic pork or prawn with veg or go for something a little more out there like lamb and courgette!


You can also make a wide range of dips and sauces to accompany your dumplings, from chilli oil to a classic soy and ginger dip. Whatever you decide to fill and dip your dumpling in, they are a crowd pleaser!




Making a cake in a wok steamer is probably not something you have considered, but steamed cakes are notoriously moist, light and fluffy. There are a range of recipes online from Japanese Mushi-Pan to traditional steamed lemon sponge. You can create savoury or sweet steamed cakes and they are perfect for young children to enjoy, as well as adults of course! Get creative and see what delicious treats you create!
